Ben Quilter, Brighton

Judo
"I'm on cloud nine at the moment – after this summer I'm hoping I'll have the final medal for my trophy cabinet. All I can do is keep training hard and fight hard on the day"
How did you get started?
I started when I was 7 years old at a club called Mid Sussex Judo Club, which no longer exists. I moved on to clubs in Peacehaven (Joff) and also Brighton Judo Club. I always represented Sussex in Southern area before competing for Great Britain. And when I lost my sight at 12 years old I got into the international scene and I've been fighting visually impaired championships ever since. Sussex has always played a massive part in my training and preparation, and this year I've been finishing my studies at the University of Chichester, in Sport and Exercise Science.
Greatest achievements
Men's -60kg Visually Impaired (VI):
World Champion 2010
European Champion 2011
Prospects for 2012/16
The current World No.1 for his classification, Quilter is a serious contender for the podium at London 2012, where he will hope to improve on his disappointing fifth place finish in Beijing. He competes on 30 August in the -60kg category – the only ParalympicsGB athlete taking part in the judo competition that day.
