Simon Munn

Wheelchair Basketball

"I do dream of being on the podium and receiving a gold medal. To go out on a high like that would be fantastic"

How did you get started?

A formidable Paralympian, Simon first appeared for Great Britain's wheelchair basketball team 20 years ago, at the 1992 Games in Barcelona. London 2012 will mark his sixth – and final – appearance for Great Britain's Paralympics basketball squad. It is an incredible achievement, not least when you consider his history. Munn, born in 1968, had his left leg amputated after a railway accident in 1989. He had been taking a shortcut home from the pub when he slipped and his foot got caught in a set of points. Unable to free himself, his leg was severed when the next train passed, after which he crawled to get help. Fortunately for Simon, a physio at his out-patient appointments during recovery was the wife of a player in the GB squad. "She kept pestering me, and in the end I agreed to go along to a game." Just months later he was selected to represent GB for the first time.

Greatest achievements

2008 Paralympic Games bronze - tournament's highest scorer

2004 Paralympic Games bronze

1996 Paralympic Games silver

Prospects for 2012

The GB squad will be unlucky not to secure a podium finish and with home advantage, gold is an achievable outcome for Munn and the team – if they can overcome Canada and Australia. GB's first Group B match takes place on 30 August against Germany, with the final scheduled for 8 September
