Learn to Sail for Women Sportivate project gets Olympic Gold Medallist Visit
Hundreds of thousands more young people are to benefit from the sporting legacy following the London 2012 Games, after Sport England recently announced an extra £24 million to expand and extend its successful Sportivate programme.
The National Lottery funding means Sportivate can continue helping 14-25 year olds to get involved in new sports until 2017.
Figures published in April 2013 show that almost 190,000 teenagers and young adults have so far benefitted from free or discounted 6-to-8 week sports coaching courses through Sportivate. Of these, 156,547 have successfully completed their course, missing no more than one session.
To help inspire and motivate these Sportivate participants, Sporting Champions - a team of current and retired elite athletes, many of whom competed at London 2012 - will visit Sportivate sessions to share their experiences and enthusiasm for sport.
Pippa Wilson MBE, Olympic Gold medallist said:
"I’m very much looking forward to visiting the Sportivate Learn to Sail for Women project at the Lagoon Watersports centre in Brighton as it gives me the opportunity to inspire more young people and to give something back. Following on from the London 2012 Olympics/Paralympics, Sportivate helps create a lasting participation legacy and offers many young adults a brilliant opportunity to experience a wide range of sports and continue their involvement in a particular sport.
The opportunity to support such community sports programmes is a real privilege for me and I hope that I can use my experiences in competing at elite level, to inspire young people and motivate them to get into sport and sustain their involvement".
Pippa will down at Brighton Marina tomorrow (Wednesday 19 June) from 6:00pm.
