A teacher from Telscombe is planning a series of Olympic themed sporting activities in her local area to encourage adults to get involved in sport.

Louise Acton, a physical education teacher at Tideway School, was inspired to get involved in sports volunteering after attending a Brighton Sport Makers workshop – where she won an iPad2 as a prize.

Louise was the lucky winner of an iPad2 tablet computer in a competition open to every workshop attendee. "It's fantastic to win a prize – I've never won anything before in my life! – but more importantly the workshop was invaluable in terms of networking," said Louise. "I came away with great contacts that will support my work in schools - particularly developing my Olympic Festival to cater for 500 children."

Louise is also planning to work with a group of adults and introduce them to a range of 'alternative' sporting activities in the hope they find one that captures their interest. Some of the activities will be Olympic related, such as volleyball, boccia and handball.

"As a secondary school PE teacher, I am used to working with children, and fostering their involvement in sport and physical activity," she said. "This workshop, however, has given me the inspiration to get more adults involved in sport."

Louise was attracted to the workshop because of a desire to volunteer for large-scale sporting events in Brighton, particularly the Brighton TAKEPART festival. "I wanted to become involved in TAKEPART. I attended previously as a visitor and feel that it plays a huge part in promoting sport in Sussex - to both children and adults."

To become a Sport Maker like Louise – and help get people into sports in your community – sign up for the next free Sport Makers workshop. The workshop is run by Active Sussex, the county sports partnership, supported by Freedom Leisure, Rix & Kay Solicitors and The University of Chichester.
