Why volunteer in sport?

People choose to volunteer for many different reasons – from helping out with something they feel passionate about to gaining new skills. Whatever the reason, volunteering comes with a range of benefits.

  • Give your CV a boost - companies like to see someone that has given up their time to volunteer- it shows they are dedicated and enthusiastic. It can also add new skills to your CV if you are thinking of a career change
  • Get back into work - a great way to get a reference, gain new skills and fill gaps on your CV.
  • Improve your confidence - you’ll learn new things and do things you might not normally do - this can be a real confidence boost!
  • Improve your health - do something active to improve your fitness.
  • Meet new people - volunteering with other people who are passionate about the same cause as you is a great way to meet likeminded people.
  • Have fun - some volunteering may be tough and require you to deal with difficult issues, but it can also be good fun.

How much time do I give to volunteering?

This is up to you. There are sporting opportunities to suit all types of people. Clubs may need volunteers to help out for an hour or two a week on an ongoing basis, whereas many sports events – even larger ones such as the Brighton Marathon or the TakePart festival – may require volunteers for just a day.

Volunteering Qualifications

Sports Leaders UK has recently launched two new volunteering qualifications: the Level 1 Award in Sports Volunteering and the Level 2 Award in Community Sports Volunteering.

The Sports Leaders UK Level 1 Award in Sports Volunteering and Level 2 Award in Community Sports Volunteering are ideal for learners who do not want to act as Sports Leaders or become Coaches but who would instead like to plan, organise and run sporting events or competitions and/or take on the role of officials.

  • The Level 1 Award in Sports Volunteering can be delivered to learners aged 13+ and takes 28 hours to deliver which includes 5 hours volunteering at an event or competition .
  • The Level 2 Award in Community Sports Volunteering can be delivered to learners ages 16+ and takes 40 hours to deliver, including 10 hours of volunteering at an event or competition.
